I was just watching Pete Watson and his crew talking about the volcano erupting. Sorry for all the folks missing, and also your NZ people. It's a terrible tragedy.

I have a niece in the area and she and her community are on an "Ash Watch" but apparently the Ash fell almost directly back onto the Island.
Of the 47 on the Island (Which is just the crater area of the volcano 5 are dead and 8 missing presumed dead. We have four specialised Burns Units in the country and these are full. Any Aussie tourists involved are going to be shipped to Australian Burn Units as soon as they are deemed fit to travel. We now are subjecting ourselves to questions regarding the sensibility of having Tourist Trips to active volcanoes. Threat levels are on a scale of 0-5 and the warning was lifted to a 2 a few days ago but the eruption was a total surprise. Unfortunately our Geo, Natural Science Department that monitors the Island's activity produced photo's of a group of tourists in the crater 0NE minute before the eruption. We can only pray that things happened so quickly they did not know what hit them.
