"Story about Killing a Town?"

I have a vague memory of a story by Louis L'Amour that basically talks about "killing a town." As I recall, the town treated someone very inhospitably, maybe a cowboy on a drive, and the crew, upon learning what a heinous place it was, basically destroyed the town. This has been years ago, but I really would like to read that story again. I think it became the basis for a later novel.
I would appreciate any hints or assistance!
