Part of the problem is that so many of the eastern tribes were moved out to Oklahoma without thought to the tribe itself. My ex, Debby, has two half-brothers, family surname Grim, whose tribe was moved from a western Pennsylvania to Oklahoma. They did manage to meet a grandfather who was the Chief of a small part of the larger tribe that was moved in the first quarter of the twentieth century to Oklahoma. Deb, however, is Irish on both sides, King and Hook...red hair, green eyes five feet eight inches, and fun to be around. She even looks like the descriptions I have read of Boudicca, queen of the Iceni. Tall, long, thick auburn hair, great personality, beautiful, and can be fierce. Although Deb is more likely to slay you with words than a sword. She takes no prisoners. Kinda ticks me off that at 65 she looks to be in her thirties, while our boys look to be pushing 50...which they are.
In any event, many of the smaller tribes of Native Americans will likely disappear given to a myriad of reasons. History has a way of being intentionally and unintentionally cruel in matters of heritage. My name in German, for example, is spelled Shäffer...the two dots is what gives it the shay fur sound, but not since the middle of the 18th century when we first stepped ashore in Pennsylvania and the English changed the spelling along with many other surnames by the way they sounded.
