I read a book of my fathers when I was child and I can only remember the hero of the book reflects at the end of the book how “something happens to a man when her realizes he’s not dangerous any more. He was a hard hitting frontiersman. Maybe moccasins? I feel like it was related to the sackette series, but not in the series. I believe it was a standalone book.
