1439, Looking for short story

I used to have a collection online that had a story about a small town lawman who had accidentally shot his best friend,the brother of a girl he was interested in.She is bitter towards him at first, but comes to see how her brothers death was unavoidable. I can't find it now. Anyone know the story and where I can find it?
