"The Southwest - a favorite"

If any of you ever get to New Mexico, I would suggest you go down to Cimarron and visit the St. James Hotel. Bullet holes in the ceiling of the dining room are real.

Also, on the way down there, you will go by the entrance to Philmont, the Boy Scout ranch (comprising some 214 square miles).

Of course if you are ever in New Mexico there are numerous other places to visit such as Santa Fe and Taos. Drive the Enchanted Circle out of Taos through such places as Angel Fire, Eagle's Nest and Red River.

Can you guess that I am a big fan of New Mexico (and Arizona)? I recall visiting Tortilla Flat, in the Superstition Mountain Range of Arizona and approaching a cage very carefully that said "Caution - Baby Rattler). When I peeked into the cage there was a baby's rattle. Those folks down there have a good sense of humor.

I spend most of my year in Animas, doing astronomy education and rockets, you are right on the money New Mexico and Arizona are treasure droves to to be visited, also there's the Hila Cliff Dwellings, near Silver City,City of Rocks Near Demming, Tombstone near Benson AZ, and Shakespear near Lordsberg NM, is like stepping 75 years being down there, I leave again in 2 weeks to go back to God's countrt.

I hope to go to Albuquerque in April. My wife has a conference there and I plan to go with her. It'll be an early graduation present for me and her birthday will also be that weekend. Not sure how much I'll be able to see but hopefully I can see stuff in that general area. Haven't been out west in years, and have only driven through NM, so I can hardly wait to get out there and see the sights.

The Foster Hotel in Chama, NM is also a "must see". It dates back to the 1870's. Across the street is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad--a still operating steam train. If you are looking for peace and quiet, south of Chama on Forest Rd. 151 (FR 151) is the Monastery of Christ in the Desert--rooms available for private retreats.

Sounds pretty cool, but I don't know the chances of getting that far away from Abq since my wife will probably be in her conference till about 5 every day. I'll probably have to stick to the general area of Abq. I'll keep it in mind though.
