"Whats Your Idea On..."
 
   Having read now about 2/3s of LL's novels, I keep reading about " drummers ", doing this,that, mainly seated, holding up a post, etc. They must be dressed in a piculiar way as they are so easily spotted. Any ideas ?...Stumper

   Well since "drummer" was a term for a traveling salesman showing his wares, I always assumed that they dressed in an obvious fashion to attract attention and maybe be easily recognized as they moved about town, you know, in times when they were away from their wagon of goods. They never wanted to miss a chance at a sale so they wanted to be spotted by a potential customer.

Just my .02, but you may have had a different question in mind and I just rambled on about stuff you already figured.

   I think Derek called it correctly in their mode of 'dress'. I don't know how many times I've seen a drummer in a movie or on TV, or described in a novel, where he was wearing a plaid suit. Or other styles equally outlandish.

   You know Dave? I was picturing that loud, ugly plaid suit as I was posting my reply.

   Thanks you two for rattlin my ole memory. YES !!! I can see them now in their plaid suit. Now every time I read the word "drummer" that pic will pop in my mind !!!LOL ...Stumper

a snake oil salesman or a cure all drink sold on top of a soapbox or wagon bench; didn't the Outlaw Josey Wales tell that drummer who offered Josie a drink outside in the street after Josey left the store with his hands full of hardtack and groceries to drink it himself? Then the drummer doesn't take too kindly at Josey's smart-alec remark and turns away...pauses, then says "Why it's Josey Wales!" out loud...then the 4 boys in military blue dress on the porch stoop all turn around and stare...posturing a bit into gun-slinging position.
Josey faces the 4 nervous dudes with his hands still full of boxes getting a ready to pull them hog-legs out.
Josey says "Well are you boys going to pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?"
Josie drops the boxes then the fun begins...blam blam boom bam it's over
Pan and then fade out to the drummer who's standing there in shock...and Josey turns tail to run for his horse bumping into shoving the drummer down into a huge fresh pile of horse dung plops face 1st plant into the green poop ... nice

   I like the scene on the raft where Josie is told of the many qualities of the snake oil the salesman is selling then spits tobacco juice on his white jacket and asks "how is it on stains" as a grinning boatman takes this conversation in.

   Yeah, Derek, that style of suit does seem to come to mind when describing an old west drummer, doesn't it!LOL ... Even in my western novel, which I'll probably never finish, the drummer who comes in contact with my protagonist is dressed as such, along with the usual protruding 'big ole gut' and food stains on his shirt front.LOL .......seems that what people expect, heh!?
