   I envy the trip and the sights and all that history. I have been to all those places along with Little Big Horn, Badlands, Deadwood, etc., but it was back in the early 70's. Would love to take my wife and kids now, as they have never been to any of those places.

Lived in Cody, Wyoming for awhile at the same time Robert Redford came to town to have something to do with moving Buffalo Bill Cody's body to another burial ground, if memory serves. Details are fuzzy. Might just have to look that up on Wickapedia to jog my memory. Been too long. They had rodeo's every week, we used to go to, also. Used to go to Yellowstone every weekend. I remember my mom got chased by a bear while she was out of the car trying to take a picture of it. Too funny.

Then moved to Miles City, Montana for awhile. That was during the 'bigfoot scare' of the 70's up there. If you weren't there to deal with that, you missed a unique time.

I sure do miss those times. Feeling nostalgic, now. Oh, well.

   You are so close to the Medicine Wheel mentioned near the end of Bendigo Shafter. It is northeast of Cody on Hwy. Alt. 14. A "must see" for LL fans.

   Rifleman,
Did you get to see the areas of battle at the Little Big Horn. For instance, where they charged 'back up' the hill from the river? And the hilltop itself where Custer and his men were surrounded and cornered?

No Devils Tower or Medicine Wheel. I didn't go south from the Little Bighorn. I went back to Jackson the way I came - back through Billings, Cody and Yellowstone.

I saw everything of the Little Bighorn you can see from the road and trails. They don't let you walk at liberty through the fields.

It's a big battlefield. I'd heard the action was quite spread out but you don't realize how much until you see it. It's about five miles from Last Stand Hill to the hill where Reno and Benteen made their defense.

But you can see the area where Major Reno came back across the river after his attack failed from an overlook. As well as the hills his troopers scrambled up to link up with Benteen on top.

There's an iron fence around the memorial stones on Last Stand Hill. You can see the stone that says, "G.A. Custer fell here" quite well but you can't walk right up to the stone.

   I'm sure they wouldn't let you browse about with a metal detector but, I was thinking,(look out!) how 'bout if you went across the hills as close to the battle ground as you could get and cast your detector about?
Humm. I know that even bullets of that era could travel a good long way.
Something to think about. ... And I don't mind a bit throwing out that idea as I know I'll never be able get out that way.

So, what do you think, Rifleman, could a body get close enough to do some of that there detectin'? Legally?lol

No, it's illegal to remove anything from the battlefield. There are warning signs in numerous places.

The part with Last Stand Hill is federal land administered by the National Park Service but it's surrounded by the Crow Agency; the battlefield is totally within the reservation and the reservation is big.

The part where Reno and Benteen made their stand is on private land (I assume it belongs to someone from the Crow Tribe, but anyway it's marked private) and you're warned not to get off the road or interpretive trails.

I imagine being seen with a metal detector would draw attention to yourself in ways that you don't want, whether from a National Park Ranger or Bureau of Indian Affairs police.

But it's nice to have those memories, especially if you're not able to do anything in the now. Or ever again for that matter.
Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. The same with touring, heh?!

Personally, I wouldn't take anything for my memories of being out west those few years. Or my hitch hiking trip to California when I was 18 either. Ah, goos stuff those memories.
I think that, maybe, we have something inside of us that tells us to 'get something done while we can'. Whatever it be, a hundred different things in life, we should DO SOMETHING, sometime.

   I was reading through this thread again and realized I explained this wrong; I said the Reno/Benteen site was on private land. That's not correct.

Both the Custer site (Last Stand Hill and surrounding area) and the site where Reno and Benteen made their defense are National Park Service land. But the two sites are about five miles apart and you pass through private land to get from one site to the next.

I assume the private land is owned by someone from the Crow Tribe since the entire battlefield is surrounded by the reservation. But the point I was trying to make is that it would not be possible to use a metal detector just outside the battlefield boundaries. You would be on the Indian reservation, not public land.

Ahh the 'ol Greasy Grass Fight the Indians called the battle of the greasy grass
been there done that with my wife back in 1986 and yes indeed that was a solemn, serene, surreal scene knowing a little about the last stand taken by those brave men as well as the courage of the Indians uprising reaction from the initial attack and what happened at ground zero many years ago
