And the usual brilliant craft with which LL generates suspense is omnipresent:

"Something was moving out there. That steer faced around, walking a step or two toward the north. My Patterson lifted a mite and I eased back on the hammer. That click was loud in the night, and that big steer flipped an ear at me, but kept his eyes where they were."

All of this is by way of introducing us to one of the most fascinating supporting characters I have encountered in all of my LL reading, Miguel Sandoval.

Another asset of this thrill-a-page epic about a cattle drive is the typical LL style of packing the plot with lots of separate chess pieces which he constantly moves around the board. Thus are we beset herein by the elements, by Comanches, by Comancheros, by cattle rustlers, and by jealousy and greed within the ranks. There is so much going on that every page is choked with plot twists, action, and/or suspense.
Enough typing! Time to sit outside under the apple tree on the splendid Berkshire morning and finish the book.

I agree. I just recently finished reading Killoe. An excellent read and it went by all too quickly. "...for a man could no more live without a gun than he could live without a horse or without food. We learned to live like the Indians, for the Indians had been there first and knew the way of the land."

It's very underrated in my view, inasmuch as I don't think I've ever seen anyone at the Campfire cite it as her/his favorite, or even in anyone's LL Top Ten List. Frankly, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone even refer to it!
