And the usual brilliant craft with which LL generates suspense is omnipresent: "Something was moving out there. That steer faced around, walking a step or two toward the north. My Patterson lifted a mite and I eased back on the hammer. That click was loud in the night, and that big steer flipped an ear at me, but kept his eyes where they were." All of this is by way of introducing us to one of the most fascinating supporting characters I have encountered in all of my LL reading, Miguel Sandoval. |
