Louis is the best. I also like * Elmer Kelton (not really gunslinging but great stories) try The Time It Never Rained; The Man who Rode Midnight; and The Ranger Series (10 books I think) * Zane Grey try The Heritage of the Desert; Shadow on the Trail; Riders of the Purple Sage (if you have a kindle or an ipad Grey's books can be downloaded for free) * Clarence Mulford. He created Hopalong Cassidy and the Bar-20. All fun reads * Max Brand. Brand was killed in WW2. Some of his books are strange, but most of them are good reads * Luke Short. Short was LL before LL. * Cameron Judd. Some of his stories drag, but he is a decent western writer * Matt Bruan * Ernest Haycox * Will Henry * Nelson Nye * Owen Wister. Virginian should be required reading * Jack Schaefer. Shane should be required reading * A B Guthrie. Only a couple of westerns, but very good stories * Dorothy Johnson. The Queen of Short Stories. * Fred Grove * Dee Brown. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee. non fiction. * Kirby Jonas * Dan Parkinson. THE CALAMITY TRAIL. super fun story! I may think of others later, but this is all I can think of off of the top of my head right now |

LAST EDITED ON 04-13-12 AT 09:55 AM (Pacific Time) I highly recommend Luke Short. Elmer Kelton had some good ones as well. Early in his career Elmore Leonard wrote some great westerns, such as Hombre and Valdez is Coming etc... TOM |

First off, in your mention of LL's daughters, I think LL's daughter Angelique is by far the prettier of the two. His 'other daughter' is homely and kinda flat chested, and looks more like a boy.LOLLLLLLLL!!!(Ah, we're gonna love you here, M!) You'll fit right in with the rest of us.)My favorite second auther behind LL is Elmer Kelton, although I liked only about 50% of his work as oppossed to liking at least 95% of LL's. So many books out there to read; some great western authors, really. Well, for the most part i can't remember names so much so i will give book names also. 'Shane' was good. Terry Johnston writes the 'Preacher/Mountain man' books, I believe, that were really good. The books about Barnaby Sky are good. I like most of the Ralph Cotton books. Sometimes he underwrites under Ralph Compton's name. And there was a book about the old frontier marshall, Bill Tilghman, I can't remember the books name, but the movie was with Sam Elliot "You Know My name'. The book is better than the movie, although I am a big fan of Sam Elliot's. Tennessee Dave "Change is inevitable, growth is optional." Author unknown |

Just noticed this particular thread about "Other Authors". Other authors who have written stuff I like would include Luke Short, T.V Olsen and Matt Braun. My favorite Matt Braun book Is "Bloody Hand". Larry McMurtry wrote some good Westerns but when he branched out and began to write stories about the earlier lives of the characters in Lonesome Dove, I found many of those stories to be just silly. "Good thing we ain't all alike" opined one old country gentleman sitting around the country store's stove; "otherwise ye'd all be a wantin' my wife"! After a brief pause, a reply came from the other side of the pot-bellied stove, "Why shucks, if they was all like me, nobody'd have her". I guess that is why book stores have so many books---it takes a lot to meet the likes of everyone. LRJ Longrifle Joe |

A man left work one Friday afternoon. Being payday, instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend hunting with the boys and spent his entire paycheck. When he finally appeared at home, Sunday night, he was confronted by a very angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally, his wife stopped the nagging and simply said to him, "How would you like it if you didn't see me for two or three days?" To which he replied, "That would be fine with me." Monday went by and he didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye ******************************************

With all these 'ghost writers' in the Western genre, it gets confusing trying to figure out who actually wrote what, and it doesn't help that a few of them have similar-sounding names. One of the sites that I use to help cut thru all the confusion is:WWW.fantasticfiction.co.uk It's so easy to use even I can do it. Under 'Browse Authors' just click on the first initial of an author's last name, scroll down to find the author's name (i.e., L'Amour!) and click on that...and you will see all the works written by the author, including the works of that author under aliases, etc. You'll even see a few 'New and Forthcoming Works' listed there! It is a very handy reference. I guarantee if you have not seen this sight before, you'll love it. Very handy. K Bar 76. |

From Rick: "I picked up a Longarm by Tabor Evans one time and scanned thru it and about to throw up green vile vomit I put it back on the shelf where it belonged unread." I understand Rick's point. It's too bad that there has to be so much gratutious sex in those novels because the main story line is interesting enough to make for a decent series. There must be enough fans of this type of the so-called "Adult Western" to support the hundreds of novels written in this series going back over 30 years. Sad commentary. ****************************************** "Ain't nuthin' like ridin' a fine horse in new country." ~Agustus MacCrae (Robert Duvall-"Lonesome Dove")

I don't mind violence if it is part of the story, as I believe it is in LL's books. I don't like to see prolonged, tasteless descriptions of erupting flesh, things being spewed, exploding organs and gushing body fluids. They just upset my stomach. As for sex scenes, if they are a genuine part of the story and are done in good taste I don't mind. If they are in bad taste or contain violence I can't be bothered with them. When it comes to westerns I plain did not like, the 'Wilderness' series of books about Mountain Man Nathaniel King by David Thompson come to mind. Now I find the era in which these books take place fascinating, but in my opinion these novels were terribly cliched and predictable, and not very well written. Has anyone else read any of them? C |
