Hey there, Mayberryman(I'm curious about that handle. Are you Andy, Barney, Otis, Howard, Gomer, Emmet, Opey, or just a good ole boy like they were?LOL)
Glad you found your way here. This is a mighty good bunch--Mayberry folks all the way!
You've some good reading ahead of you, that's fer sure. And if'n I were you I'd thoroughly enjoy every dad-gum one of them on that first read! Of course, the 2nd, and future other reads are great, too! That's one of the things that makes LL such good reading, they're good again and again.
So, welcome, and good reading!And that tag line of yours. Well, it's the ever livin' truth! When I was about 30 I told this fellow I worked with that the years seemed to be going by rather quickly. He, who was 70 at that time, told me that I hadn't seen anything yet, that it gets faster as you get older. Boy, was he ever right!LOL I'm in my mid-fifties now and feel as if I were on the merry-go-round with the wind in my face, and the years going by just as quickly. ... I hope this life lasts longer than those rides did because, actually, I'm enjoying growing older. Again, M, welcome!! Tennessee Dave "Change is inevitable, growth is optional."

Welcome, Mayberryman. You've a fantastic journey ahead as you work your way through the Louis L'amour canon. I started reading LL at age 12. I'm 22 now and have read about half of his works. Like you, I'm working on rounding out my collection by picking up old paperbacks at bookstores and yard sales. You'll find we discuss a little bit of everything around here, so, in the words of LL, "light an' set." - Far Rider |

Tennessee Dave, Although I am not any of those great characters from that (in my opinion) greatest series of all time, in another way I am all of them. I was a police officer for 26 years 1972-98 and many times would think back and wonder how Andy would treat this situation. Although I worked in a city that had a fairly big drug problem and high unemployment I found that it was never a bad thing to show people the same respect that I would wish (another lesson from Mayberry). In the two and a half books I have read so far it seems that Mr. L"Amour found the same simple and strong qualities of humanity to be an important thing. Speaking of growing older, my wife (of 41 years) and I have grown as close as two people could ever grow, to verge on it being scary at times. Yes, getting older, when somewhat contented, is the cherry on top of the Ice Cream Sunday and should be appreciated on a daily basis. I want to thank everybody for the kind words and again, I look forward to being a positive member of this family.Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end the faster it goes. |

As I type this reply, I am looking at my framed picture of all 35 Mayberry characters that I purchased in Mt. Airy a few years ago. We stayed at Aunt Bee's motel, ate at Barney's restaurant, and had a picture taken with Floyd the Barber. Lastly, I had my picture taken next to the statue of Andy and Opie outside of the Andy Griffith Playhouse. A lot of fond memories. ****************************************** As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way. |

Welcome.
I've read every novel by LL (most of them several times). Started reading LL when I was young (9 or so) and have always enjoyed LL.

Welcome Mayberryman! Count me as one more admirer of your chosen handle. That show holds a very special place for me as well. You'll like it here, good folks all arounnd and were fortunate to have you join us.LL brings us together, and we find many more common threads among us here, but it always comes back to LL and his stories. Like the others already said, you'll love all his books - over and over again. Look forward to your insights as you read them. P.S. I'm also quite envious of your hobby. It looks like a lot of fun.
