"Snake!"

Hello all, SNAKES!! I am P.O.ed!! I watched some Mockingbirds meet and do their courting, watched them build their nest together. Watched them taking turns sitting on their two eggs. Was just thrilled. I love my birds, watching them, listening to them, etc.. Well the other day I noticed the birds were acting agitated. I checked on them (nest in bush is only about 4' off the ground) and there was abt a 10" Rat Snake in the nest, just wrapping around the eggs. I tried to get him but he got away. Rest of day the birds were back sitting on their eggs. I thought great, the snake is gone. Well I got up and went and checked the nest the next morning and the eggs were gone. So either during the night or earlier that morning that damned snake came back and ate those eggs!! Dammit man!! I know that is nature but it still pisses me off!! Pistolero the bird man! What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. The subtle tongue, the sophist guile, they fail when the broadswords sing; Rush in and die dogs--I was a man before I was a king! ---From The Road of Kings |

A number of years ago, I was out for a run on an old railroad track. I was running between the rails with my head down, as I did not want to trip on a tie. I was in mid-stride and to my horror; right in front of me was a black snake sunning himself (or herself). The snake was so big that it touched both sides of the rails. It was not the Silverton RR track either – a regular gauge railroad. I don’t know how I managed to defy gravity and actually (so it seemed to me) pulled a David Blaine and raised my leg (which was on a downward angle) high enough to go over the snake. I was so unnerved that I actually stopped running, walked back to the snake and started yelling at it. It then struck a menacing pose and I quickly decided to let bygones be bygones and resumed my run. ******************************************

LAST EDITED ON 04-08-12 AT 09:39 AM (Pacific Time) Back in 1969 whilst I was a wee lad of 8 years or so with my dad and 5 of my brothers, in the early morning hours we parked our old Mitchell Camper and Dodge truck for a day of fishing at Storrie Lake 3 miles north of Las Vegas off HWY 518 to Mora. By the lake shores was tall, high grass where I played nearby discovered a few eggs hidden inside a large bird's nest; and I picked them up putting them in a small Dixie Cup, then proceeded to show my dad and bros what I'd found. My dad admonishes me for removing the eggs and says to me to take them back where I'd found them. I turned around and next thing I knew there was a rattlesnake behind me which had followed me all the way back to the truck. The rattler proceeded to chase me around the camper - me holding the Dixie Cup full of eggs screaming to high heaven; then it coiled up, hissing, making all sorts of racket scaring the bejeezis out of me. My dad yells at my brothers to go get the shovel, grabs it by the handle, and dad cuts its head off like if he was chopping wood...turns to me and says hey, you're the one that caused all that by taking its eggs. I then marched back to the nest and put them back where they came from. Man, once I locked eyes with that snake it chased me for about 30 feet before coiling up...all the while me hopping, dancing, and skipping around like a young Mongoose akin to "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" If I was good at embellishing my story somewhat with some touch ups, it might rank up there with Pistols' scorpion event at the hotel back in the day |
