   You certainly are one lucky person. I am so envious. I didn't learn to ride until a couple of years ago when I was 68. I soon realised how much I had missed by not taking it up earlier in my life. Even though I'm 70 and supposed to be having a quiet life, I just do not have the time to look after a horse but I honestly wish I was able.

I hope you and Maggie have many enjoyable years together.

Enjoy LD, there's nothing finer than riding all day and enjoying a good campfire at night.Sounds like you have a great teacher, I've been riding down here in NM for 2 years,and taking folks out on trail rides as part of our education program, nothing finer than riding pretty country, seeing beautiful views from between a horses ears,enjoy and learn you can being a cowboy takes a lifetime to get a cowboy PHD.And remember never squat with your spurs on.

   Thanks guys! It will be fun when we move Maggie to a stable we found two miles from our house. I'll be able to go and ride every day after school and then between work, I shouldn't have to much trouble paying to keep her there each month.

good deal - you are surely blessed more than you know with this assignment...and those generous people mentioned seem to figure you are a trusted soul to blend you with an aware critter like Mag for a partner.
You two so far are getting along and in good shape.
When I read your story I couldn't help but think of 'ol Chick Bowdrie's long-legged hammer-headed outlaw roan part Mustang which he picked out of a wild bunch mean, lean, raw-boned and irritable.
Bowdrie had an affection for his horse, but pet him and he'd try to bite you, curry him and he'd kick, that roan could run like a jackrabbit for as long as need be; once on a trail he'd go all day and all night with a sort of ugly determination.
Bowdrie had never known a horse with so much personality and all of it bad...nor did the horse associate much with other horses and remained aloof
Once mounted the roan would take its own pace in a shambling loose-limbed trot as the miles began to fall behind
Anywho, boy if Maggie learned and would come to you at the sound of your whistle, that would be awesome
I hope you guys have a long, healthy sharing relationship with each other

I can't whistle worth a darn but when Mag is out in the pasture and I want her to come in to the corral I can walk out towards her in a half circle and give her what Pat Parelli calls a "mother in law" look at her hindquarters. Once she starts to disengage and face me I just turn and walk away, and she will usually (key word) gallop up to me and slow to an extended walk directly behind me. She'll even follow me in all the way to the corral, where I put a halter and lead rope on her, then we start playing games.

You are right in saying I have a good instructor! He's giving me probably a thousand dollars worth of free lessons and he really knows what he's doing. He said he really loves his horse but wants to make sure she gets the best home he can find for her.

I'll just bet you'll make Maggie Darlin' look as pretty as a show horse!

   Kevin, where in NM do you take folks for trail rides? A few years ago I took an all-day trail ride in the Pecos Wilderness in NM. Near the end of the trip I was so sore I had to dismount and walk the last mile.

   That is so wonderful. They are like big puppies and have to be God's chosen, right up there with doggies. It's been twelve yrs since I had my last horse, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss her.

Have had several throughout my life: one was an honary old draft horse named Maude; one was a quarter horse named Drambouie; one was a reject from a rodeo who wandered into our back yard so I named him HoBo; and the last one was the sweetest little black Arabian with four white "socks" and her name was Soxie. She was so sweet. I would braid little beads in her mane, boy she knew she looked pretty and would shake her head around and hold it up so proud. But unfortunately my right knee went bad about ten yrs ago, and with or without a saddle my leg would go numb...so don't get riding much anymore. If I had a bigger place, I'd have horses around just to hang with..they've always been the love of my life

Thanks fellas. Yes I am truly lucky, no problems with the old knee unless I get up in the saddle. So you know what they say, if it feels good do it; if not, dont. But I get to ride my trike, and walk good trails and have resorted to having lesser creatures, my beloved doggies (6)
