"The 20 Best in the West"

American Cowboy Magazine has just published a list of the 20 Best Rural Towns in the West.

The populations are generally under 1000 people (5 towns >1000 - all towns vastly outnumbered by cattle) and surrounded by beautiful rangeland and wilderness.

They are:

Alturas, California, Taylorsville, California, Battle Mountain, Nevada, Jordan Valley, Oregon, Winthrop, Washington, Riggins, Idaho, Westcliffe, Colorado, Walden, Colorado, Ennis, Montana, Dubois, Wyoming, Cimarron, New Mexico, Boulder, Utah, Young, Arizona, Throckmorton, Texas, Bandera, Texas, Goodwell, Oklahoma, Ames, Oklahoma, Lewellen, Nebraska, Fort Pierre, South Dakota, and Medora, North Dakota.

Sad to say, I have only visited one – Cimarron, New Mexico. Has anyone visited some of these?

I, too, have visited Cimarron, NM and the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. Also enjoyed Eagle Nest and Elizabethtown (Etown) in the same area.

I've seen a listing of such from other folks and I know there are good town all over the good old U.S. of A.
Being a western mag I'm sure they are bias to the western towns.
That said, I do love the west ... and miss it greatly.
Humm. If I could, I would live in NM around Ruidoso ot maybe Taos. ... But I fear I will never see the west again. Quien Sabe?

I love visiting the smaller towns out West. I find the people interesting and always friendly. Not a great fan of cities.
On places you'd like to live TD! During our many miles of travelling the West, one of the places we fell instantly in love with and would happily retire to is a place called Swan Valley.
It's east of Idaho Falls, south west of Yellowstone and near the Wyoming border.
It may be we were a little smitten by the beautiful colors on the hillsides as it was start of Fall. The Snake River runs alongside the valley and the population is sparce but close by to many places. Don't imagine it would be easy in the winter but I think we'd get used to that.

Battle Mountain NV is about 70 west of where I live in Elko, NV. At one time they had a billboard on interstate 80 billing themselves as "The Armpit of the West" I guess everyone needs something to make them feel unique. I believe they got the idea from some magazine writer that called them that.
